Certified Seed

In Finland, only certified (officially verified), seed may be marketed for sowing purposes. Using officially inspected and approved seed guarantees a high-quality harvest.

Certified seed is true to variety, free from wild oat, has good germination and does not contain harmful weed seeds or plant diseases.

The Finnish Food Authority's Seed Unit monitors the production chain of certified seed from the farmer's field to the seed company selling the seed. This ensures that the seed meets legal requirements and are healthy, pure, true to variety and have good germination. A certified seed lot can be identified by an official certificate attached to the sealed package. The production and packaging of certified seed lots requires a permit from the authority.
